Contour Pattern Design

Contour Pattern Design

This pattern came about when I found it was possible to vary the width of paths in Illustrator, so at one point the path is narrow and at another point the path is wider. With a lot of experimentation, I found going from just 3 pixels at the narrowest expanding to 9 pixels wide at the widest worked best for this pattern.

Rotating The Design

I felt the design would work better vertically so all of the transformations had to be swapped around to make the design appear to tumble.

Alternate Columns Inverted

To add to the interest I added an inverted column of the pattern to alternate across the page.

Colouring The Pattern

I felt rather than colouring the design, it would be more effective to make the design white and colour the background instead. It was then easy to experiment with lots of lovely background colours.

The Ripple Effect

The final stage of the design was perhaps the most rewarding. I felt instead of repeating identical versions moved along, it would be better to make the copies progressively less opaque. So the first one is 100%, second 90% and so on. This means the repeated versions appear to soften into the distance creating a three dimensional effect.

Simple Horizontal Origins

This design is based roughly on a stretched sine wave.

Using AI

I haven’t used AI to create any of my work. I do use it for areas I feel I can outsource, such as captions, descriptions and keywords. My latest batch of photographs was sent to the Alamy photo library with mainly AI written words saving a lot of tedious research.

AI: Describes this pattern as… A sophisticated pattern of sweeping parallel lines, flowing in graceful curves and rhythmic waves to create an elegant sense of movement and depth.

Contour Alternatives

Other Versions

I love to experiment with a design to see how far I can push the potential. For this pattern I also tried varying the saturation of a colour for each of the 6x paths. Varying from 100% colour to just 5%. This has the effect of the paths progressing from rich colour to practically white. Which do you prefer?
