Funfair Pattern Design

Funfair

Ideas for this pattern came before the title. I felt the design had a circus / fairground vibe, hence the final Funfair title.

Editing Ideas

I love to experiment with geometric shapes and often create test designs showing all of the ideas grouped together.

Sometimes the ideas you thought were the strongest just don’t work as a pattern. Looking at the selection above, any of them could have made a successful design. For Funfair I chose two elements to concentrate on. As it turns out one of the two elements to repeat got ditched soon after!

Trial and Error Variations

I felt the diamond and triangular-based designs would work well together. So all the other designs have gone back into the box of ideas for the future.

Colouring The Pattern

I almost always start with primary colours red and blue with black. I then work through variations to see new colour combinations. I then use Adobe Illustrator’s Recolour Artwork tool to see live previews of changing all of the colours at once. Something that would have taken ages to do by hand.

Christmas Versions

For me any pattern with a lot of red in it feels like Christmas to me. Any of the 3 designs shown full screen above would be great on Christmas packaging!

Using AI

AI: Describes this pattern as… A playful geometric pattern of bold triangles and diamonds arranged in rhythmic bands, evoking bunting, fairground tents and the excitement of a festival.

I haven’t used AI to create any of my work. I do use it for areas I feel I can outsource, such as captions, descriptions and keywords. My latest batch of photographs was sent to the Alamy photo library with mainly AI written words saving a lot of tedious research.

Alternative Titles

AI Suggested these titles (in order of AI preference) Funfair, Carnival, Festival, Fanfare, Fiesta, Jamboree, Parade, Pageant, Celebration, Festoon, Pennant, Bunting, Big Top, Circus, Carousel, Midway, Side Show, Fairground, Helter Skelter, High Spirits, Merriment, Revelry, Playtime, Kaleidoscope, Harlequin, Diamond Dance, Triangle Parade, Geometric Rhythm, Festival Rhythm, Modern Folklore.

Funfair Rotated 90°

Other Versions

I love to experiment with a design to see how far I can push the potential. As well as all the various colour combinations I tried turning the whole design by 90° making the strips of small diamonds more prominent. Perhaps this version would be more useful for curtains? What do you think?
