Interlock Pattern Design
Interlock Pattern
You will have guessed this pattern is based on 3D cube shapes, with a hexagonal grid behind.
AI describes the design as: Interlocking cubes and bold colourways create a rhythmic geometric pattern where structure, symmetry, and repetition come together.
Outline Shapes
Outlining the cube-shapes in different ways, gives the pattern variety.
Semi Transparent
A lot of the elements are slightly see-through achieved by making the opacity less than 100%. This creates new colours where these overlap. Look out for unexpected key-line colours!
Colouring The Pattern
The first designs had very simple colours so see if the design worked. I then progressed to some of my favourite combinations such as green and purple. With so many elements it would be difficult to keep choosing new combinations so this is where Adobe Illustrator’s Recolour Artwork feature comes into its own. By selecting all the colours I could then globally change everything but keeping the same tonal differences.
Introducing The Y Shapes
Central to the design are the two Y shapes, one is inverted. Early designs had these Y-shapes much bolder, but I felt they needed something more subtle.
This version of the design adds thin central key-lines in white bringing more contrast and details. It also has the added benefit of adding white to the design. Something I feel all patterns need.
